Ivey-Sol Surfactant Remediation (SER®) of Petroleum and Chlorinated Vapor, Soil and Groundwater Contamination

Speaker: George Ivey, Ivey International Inc.

Ivey International Inc. is an international award winning remediation technology and development company that specializes in vapor intrusion, and soil and groundwater contamination treatment. The company has 25 years of experience in developing remediation technologies for air, soil, and groundwater applications.

All Ivey International products are PFOS and PFOA free, 1,4 Dioxin Free, biodegradable, and pH neutral.

Contaminants, most commonly light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) and dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) and, go through a phase-partitioning process of sorption which limits the ‘availability’ of contaminants for physical, biological or chemical remediation.

Ivey’s surfactant remediation technology reduces the surface tension of groundwater to allow it to enter into and exit finer pathways where contaminants reside, aiding remediation of finer texture soils.
Ivey-sol effectively increases the availability of the contaminant for biological, physical and chemical remediation. Once available, Ivey’s products significantly improve vapor, soil and groundwater remediation. The newer DECON-IT product greatly enhances surface decontamination of field equipment, to oily pumps and hosing, and tank cleaning.

Case study example:
Active grain elevator, Kansas City, Kansas
Contaminants include carbon tetrachloride (CT) and carbon disulfide used in the 1970s and 1980s. Leaks from an above ground storage (AST) that leaked impacting groundwater and soil were discovered in the 1990s. Remediation started in 2007 with installation of a dual phase vacuum extraction system, which operated for 7 years, with diminishing rates of contaminant mass recovery with time. During that period they recovered 9,100 pounds (690 gallons) of CT vapors, and 33 pounds CT NAPL, but had to pump and treat >7.5 million gallons of groundwater in the process.

Challenges included proximity to a substation, railroad tracks, and elevator infrastructure.
Using Ivey-sol products and a ‘push-pull’ process, the remaining CT mass was significantly enhanced for in-situ during eight applications (3 Pilot + 5 Full-scale) completed within one calendar year, using the existing vapor phase removal system. At conclusion Ivey-sol removal all diesel LNAPL on-site plus >98% of the CT impacts.
